Qualification / Experience
To work in a legal environment you have to be thorough, professional, and if you really want to progress up the ranks you have to be highly intelligent and prepared to put in the hours and work extremely hard to stand out in a highly competitive environment.

Legal Secretaries must complete a City & Guilds course. It is on these courses that Legal Secretaries learn essential skills such as audio typing, proof reading, advanced legal word processing and legal studies.

Lawyers will need good GCSE results and A Levels to go on to study for a degree. Top universities require 3 A grades at A Level, but there is no requirement as to which subjects should be taken. Although some schools offer the chance to take Law at GCSE and A Level, it is not required to become a lawyer. A degree is essential and you will need a minimum of a 2:1 to secure a training contract at a top firm.

Some Solicitors and Lawyers have Law LLB (Hons) Law degrees but these are not required and many are non-law graduates. If you choose not to study Law you will have to take an additional conversion course called a Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). All students then have to take the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which lasts around a year.

Your training contract will be the final stage of training to become a Solicitor. Your training contract will give you real hands on experience at a law practice, and give you the opportunity to refine and develop your professional skills. Whilst completing your training contract you will learn skills such as; advocacy and oral presentation, case and transaction management, client care and practice support, communication skills, dispute resolution, drafting, interviewing and advising, legal research and negotiation.
